My pet has fleas -- What do I do now?

Getting rid of fleas requires breaking the gestation (breeding) cycle which is about 2 weeks, but can be longer depending  upon humidity and temperature.   If you're interested in finding out more about fleas and ticks, here is a good start.

    FDA Flea information

    FleaSmart

These are not the only alternatives to flea control. Some proponents of "natural " solutions will cheerfully point out the "horrors" of "Chemical Warfare" and the effects on both pets and humans. These are individual choices the pet owner alone must be comfortable with; however, regardless of the solutions chosen, please consider that fleas are BLOOD PARASITES -- if only "run off' of their current host, they will seek out anything in the environment that also can provide a blood supply -- YOU!  That having been said:
The severity of the infestation (or the number of fleas found) will indicate what steps you'll need to take.
If your pet has...   Then your flea or tick problem is ...
Less than 5  fleas or
less than 3 ticks
Minimal.  Treating the pet is probably fine, additional measures may not be needed.
Less than 10  fleas Moderate.  Treating the pet and the environment is probably a better course of action
More than 10  fleas or more than 3 ticks Severe. Repeated treatments of the pets and environment every 10 to 14 days, 3 to 4 times over a 6 to 8 week period would most likely be necessary to impact and reduce the infestation.
First,  bathing  your pet in a flea shampoo will usually have an immediate kill, but some "stragglers" can survive the initial process.  Depending upon severity of the infestations, a oatmeal rinse may be applied to relieve the itching. There are several options after bathing:

Dip:    A dip is an insecticide liquid applied directly to your pet. These will usually have an immediate kill effect on the fleas; but the residual, or how long it will continue to work, is greatly dependant on the method of drying.  The longest residual effect (up to 2 weeks) can be achieved if the solution is allowed to air dry on the pet. Additional drying, either towel drying or blow drying will reduce the effectiveness of the dip to a few days or even less.

Drops:    Several manufactures have developed flea treatments that are applied after the grooming is completed.  Among these are Advantage and Frontline.  These products being applied after the grooming process, means they don't affect hair cutting or the drying process on the pet.  They also have a residual of 4 - 6 weeks per application.

Pills:    Program, among others are applied independently of the grooming process.  Also administered once a month, Usually 2-3 doses are required to build up in the pet's system before becoming effective.

Next is treating the environment, including the home and yard.  The entire home should be treated with appropriate sized flea bombs.  There are yard and kennel sprays available for the outside premises.
In the case of a severe infestation,  treating the pet and the environment should be repeated at 10-14 day intervals, approximately 3 or 4 times.  This course is needed to break the flea cycle.

How often should I get my pet groomed?

There is no hard and fast rule about how frequent you should have your pet groomed. If your pet is indoors most of the time and sleeps with you, then you may want to have the pet groomed more often; on the other hand, a pet that spends most of the time outside you may choose to have groomed less.  Of course, if there is a skin condition or infestation, more frequently may be necessary.

While most of our clientele have their pets groomed every four to six weeks, some are weekly, yet others are once or twice a year.

We recommend that puppies get groomed as young as possible, and as frequently as is economically feasible. Waiting until pet is one, two or more years old for a first grooming is akin to tossing a teenager whose never experienced water into a swimming pool. Having a puppy groomed as young and as frequently as possible get them used to the process and handling necessary to groom them without injury either to the pet or the groomer. After one and a half to two years, your pet will have become comfortable as they are ever going to become with the process and can be maintained at 4-6 week (or longer intervals)

Why are shop and mobile grooming prices so different?

Typically, mobile groomers are $15 to$20 more than their shop counter parts, but each service has it's own pluses and minuses.

Grooming shops usually rotate pets in assembly line fashion between employees. Shops will usually cage dry pets, while the option is rarely available to mobile groomers.   Mobile groomers offer more personalized service since the groomer alone performs all services on the customers pet(s) at the customers location.  All grooming services are performed in our customized, self-contained, grooming salons that are equipped with warm water, heat and A/C to keep your pet comfortable.
